About Nashik Saptashrungi Temple

Saptashrungi Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple near the village of Nanduri. It is 26 km from Vani and 65 km from Nashik. The temple is on top of a cliff that is 1,230 m high.

The Goddess Saptashrungi is honored at the temple. Most people in Maharashtra know the temple as one of the “three and a half Shakti Peethas.” The temple is also one of the 51 Shakti Peethas found on the Indian subcontinent. It is said to be where Sati’s right arm fell. People also think Mahishasur Mardini, who killed the demon Mahishasur, is the god who rules over the temple. People think that the demon’s head is the stone head of a buffalo at the bottom of the hill.

The Devi is worshipped on the top floor of the Saptashrungi Temple, a two-story shrine. The goddess idol is said to be swayambhu, which means it came into being on its own. It was carved into a rock on the side of a mountain. She is surrounded by seven (sapta in Sanskrit) peaks, so the name Saptashrungi Mata comes from that (mother of the seven peaks). The picture of Devi is huge. It stands about 10 feet tall and has 18 arms with different weapons in each hand. Sindoor, considered lucky in this area, is always used to cover the idol. The Devi has a high crown, a silver nose ring, and necklaces that hang from it.

Chaitrotsav is the most important event of the year at the Saptashrungi temple. The festival begins on Rama Navami and ends on Chaitra Poornima, which is the most important day of the festival. Women who don’t have children come to the festival to make promises and ask the Goddess for children. On the last day of the nine-day festival, about 250,000 people and as many as 1 million people show up in the last three days. This temple also has a lot of pomp and excitement for Dussehra and Navratri.

The mountains have been carved into steps that lead to the temple. Now, a road that can be driven on goes up to 1150 m. You only have to climb 470 steps to get to the shrine, which takes about 45 minutes. There is also a trolley system for people who can’t climb stairs.

Legend of Vani Saptashrungi Temple

The story behind this event is that Prajapati Dakshuda, Sati’s father, was called by the heads of the Vedic conditions while performing Yajna, such as by giving ghee, kshina, grains, and so on to the fire god and other gods.

Hindu beliefs say that the Goddess Saptashrungi lives on the seven highest mountain peaks. It is in the Indian city of Nashik, near the town of Nanduri in the Kalwan taluka. Most people in Maharashtra call the story of Saptashringi Devi one of the “Three and a half Shakti Peethas.”

The same person can also be called Mahishasura Mardini or Saptashringi Devi. Mahishasura was in charge of the wild bull that lived too close to people and made them unhappy.

The gods and people of the exchange asked the Goddess to kill the demon hiding near the forest.
In the temple, we can see a stone carving of a crazed Bullhead. When you start aggressively, it shows that the dishonest Goddess has won.

From the bottom of the mountain, you have to climb 500 steps, which takes between 40 and 50 minutes.
So, to save the people, the Goddess Saptashrungi Devi crushed him. In anger, Lord Shiva was carrying her dead body on his shoulders. He cut off her right arm, and Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to tear her body into 55 pieces.

In the story, Devi’s right arm has fallen off. Lord Shiva is carrying her body on his shoulders, and Vishnu uses his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into pieces.

Another one of Saptashrungi’s Story

At the Saptashrungi, when Mahishasura was causing trouble all over the universe, the powerful Goddess took the form of Devi Durga to kill the evil demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura was also called the buffalo demon at one time. Devi Saptashrungi Nivasini is said to have moved to the Saptashrungi after killing the buffalo demon. In honor of this, there is a big statue of the head of a buffalo at the front of the temple. A Trishul with bells and lamps is also in the temple’s front yard.

Ramayana Connection

When Laxman was sleeping, and only the “sanjeevani” herb could wake him up, Lord Hanuman flew to these hills to find the herb. Some people also think that Lord Ram, Seeta, and Laxman went to these hills to ask the great Goddess for her blessing.

Significance of the Temple

Sati, Lord Shiva’s wife, went to a Yagna at her father’s house even though she wasn’t invited because she had married Shiva against his wishes and out of love. Because she wasn’t invited, Sati felt insulted and burned herself in the fire of the Yagna. When Lord Shiva heard about this, he was very sad and took Sati’s body and started to walk around the universe.

Vishnu used his Sudarshan chakra to cut Sati’s body into 51 pieces. Each piece fell to the ground in a different place in the subcontinent, and this is where Sati’s right arm landed. Three and a half shakti peethas represent four temples in different places: one for the Goddess Mahalakshmi in Kolhapur, the Tuljabhavani Temple in Tuljapur, the Renuka temple in Mahur, and the Saptashrungi temple in Vani.

The holy ‘OM’ parts are also shown in these four temples. Most people think of Saptashrungi as half shakti peetha, which looks like the smaller part of OM. It is a two-story sanctum with Devi’s shrine at the top. The Devi’s image is carved into the rock face at the bottom of the sheer scarp. The saffron-colored image of the Goddess is about 8 feet tall. Trishula, Sudarshana Chakra, Shankha, fire flames, bow and arrow, vajra and ghanta, danda, akshmala, kamandalu, rays of the sun god, sword and shield, parashu, wine cup, Gada, lance, and pasha are all gifts given to the Goddess to kill Mahishasura.

The Goddess wears a fancy crown and jewelry, changing her clothes daily. The temple recently had renovations done so that it could have more facilities. The steep rocky slope has now been turned into 500 steps so visitors and devotees can approach the Goddess in an orderly way.

Chairtotsav is the most important festival of Saptashrungi. It begins on Ram Navmi and ends on Chaitra Poornima, the festival’s biggest day. Women who don’t have children go to this festival to ask for blessings to have children. About 2.5 million people attend the festival, and about 1 million gather in the last three days to celebrate. After Navaratri and Dussera, Shukla Paksha Dashami, which takes place in the month of Ashwin, is yet another very loved festival.

Temple Architecture

The Saptashrungi temple gets its name from the seven peaks that surround it. The Saptashrungi temple is on the side of a mountain. To get there, people have to climb 500 steps up the mountain. At the bottom of the hill, where the steps start, there is a stone head of a buffalo. This is thought to be the head of the demon Mahishasura.

The Devi is said to have carved herself out of a rock on the side of a mountain. This is called swayambhu. The idol is covered in sindoor and has a crown and jewelry on top of it. A trident/Trishula with bells and lamps is in the temple’s front courtyard. There is a hall and a gallery for people who want to worship there.

Rituals at Saptashrungi Temple

In the two-story shrine, the Devi is said to be “swayambhu,” which means she came into being on her own. The 8-foot-tall idol is covered in sindoor, which makes it look like a burning orange. The powerful Goddess has eighteen arms, and she holds weapons that can’t be stopped in each hand. She was given these weapons to help her fight and defeat the evil demon Mahishasura.

As for the Goddess, the Devi has a tall, beautiful crown and a silver nose ring. Necklaces are also part of what she wears every day. The statue wears a robe and a blouse that flows gracefully. New clothes are chosen for the Devi and put on the statue daily. Before getting dressed for worship, she has a warm bath and a formal Abhishek. On holidays, the deity is dressed up with special, expensive jewelry that is kept in a safe place in the temple the rest of the time. In the courtyard of the Saptashrungi temple, there is a trident called a Trishula with bells and lamps.
