About Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple

Sigandur is a small village surrounded by the river Sharayathi and lush forests. The village is in the Karnataka state, and it is in the Sagar Taluka. Goddess Chowdeshwari lives in the Temple. She is also called Sigandur Chowdeshwari in the Temple and the village. The goddess living here is thought to be very powerful, and the Sagar Taluka, the closest town to the village, is about 42 km away.

The Temple also has an image of mother Sigandur Chowdeshwari, another idol. The idol is very old. The idol of Chowdeshwari was found on the banks of the river Sharavathi around 300 years ago. The Shree Choudeshwari Temple is in the state of Karnataka, in the Sagara Taluk district of Shimoga. The city of Sigandur is a wealthy one. Shree Devi kshetra has been around for more than 300 years. The town of Sagar is 42 km from Sigandur kshetra. Thumari is close to it. Mother Choudeshwari’s real name is Sigandureshwari. Sigandur is a small town in Sagara Taluk, Karnataka, India. The Sharavathi River built the Linganamakki dam on three sides of the village. The Temple of Sigandur Chowdeshwari is what makes this place famous. Every day, hundreds of people come to see it. The Temple is run by the temple committee, whose secretary as of 2013 is Holekoppa Ramappa.

The Sagara Taluk headquarters are about 40 kilometres from Sigandur. Once a dam was built on the Sharavathi River, Sigandur and Sagar could no longer get to each other. 2 Cars, tourists, pilgrims, and locals could travel by water on barges. Every day at 5 PM, the barge service stops.

During the month of Ashada, special pooja and worship are held every year in Sigandur (June–July). Due to a lack of crowd control, thousands of people come to this place during this pooja. As a result, people get hurt in stampedes and other accidents. On January 14 and 15, “Makara Sankranthi” day, Sigandureshwari has a fair every year. On Makara Sankranthi, people pray to the goddess while taking a bath in the holy water of the river Sharavathi.

One thing that makes the Temple stand out is that the temple trustee and other people from the village work to improve it. With the goddess’s help and blessing, a guest house with 60 rooms and most facilities already built-in has been built.

Famous Festivals

Every year, Jathre, a large and grand fair, is held in this location. This annual fair is held on the day of Makara Sankranti in January. During this occasion, people from various regions of South India visit the Temple to seek the goddess Sigandur Chowdeshwari’s divine grace. As per Hindu tradition, Makara Sankhranti is one of the most auspicious days.

By Air: You can fly into Mangalore Airport and then take a car or bus to reach the temple. From Mangalore airport to the temple is 188 kilometres away.

By Train: The closest station is Sagar Jambagaru station, which follows Shimoga town station. From this station, you must take a bus/car to Holebagilu, then a launcher, followed by a van/car to reach the temple. From the train station, the distance to the temple is 52 kilometres.

By Road: You can get to Sagar, take a bus or van to Holebagilu, and then get to the launcher and temple.
