About Peddamma Thalli Temple, Hyderabad

One of Hyderabad’s most well-known religious temples, the Peddamma Thalli Temple, is in the Jubilee Hills. It has a great location in the middle of the city. People say that it is older than 150 years. In 1993, when the Rajagopuram was built, the temple got the look it has now. It is one of the most important places to see on your Hyderabad City tour because of how beautiful it is and how important it is religiously. Goddess Lakhmi is shown as Santhan Laxmi sitting on a lion (Simha Vahanam), and Maa Durga is honored at Peddamma Temple.

The name “Peddamma” comes from the words “Pedda” and “amma,” which together mean “mother of mothers” or “ultimate mother,” which refers to the Goddess. After you walk into the temple, there is a place where coins are lined up vertically, and people make a wish. People believe putting a coin vertically will make their wishes come true.

Temple History

There are a lot of stories about the Goddess and where her home came from. One of them says that after the Goddess killed the Asura, she came to this place and drank from the well to quench her thirst. It also says that a shepherd later found the Goddess’s statue here, and this temple was later built in the same spot.

In another well-known story, this Goddess is linked to the fierce Asura Mahishasura and the well-known legend about him. Mahisha Asura, who had the head of a water buffalo, was a powerful Asura who did a lot of hard penance and got a lot of good things in return. One of these gifts kept Gods and people from hurting or killing him. So, he thought he was unbeatable and immortal and started bothering the gods and people. Both heaven and earth began to shake when he attacked and hurt them.
But Mahishasura thought women were weak, so he didn’t think they could threaten him. So, he left women out when he was looking for the boons. And because of this, the Gods decided to challenge him and end his reign of terror.

Goddess Durga came into being with the help of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, known as the Supreme Trinity of Gods. As the leader of the celestial army, the Goddess marched toward the Asura and his forces, riding a roaring lion and carrying deadly weapons. In the fierce battle that followed, the Goddess beat Mahishasura and killed him, which was a huge relief for both the Gods and the people.

People worship this Goddess as Peddamma, the divine Mother who felt sorry for her suffering children and saved them. And the Goddess is still here as “Simha Vahini,” which means “the one riding or sitting on a lion.”
