In another well-known story, this Goddess is linked to the fierce Asura Mahishasura and the well-known legend about him. Mahisha Asura, who had the head of a water buffalo, was a powerful Asura who did a lot of hard penance and got a lot of good things in return. One of these gifts kept Gods and people from hurting or killing him. So, he thought he was unbeatable and immortal and started bothering the gods and people. Both heaven and earth began to shake when he attacked and hurt them.
But Mahishasura thought women were weak, so he didn’t think they could threaten him. So, he left women out when he was looking for the boons. And because of this, the Gods decided to challenge him and end his reign of terror.

Goddess Durga came into being with the help of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, known as the Supreme Trinity of Gods. As the leader of the celestial army, the Goddess marched toward the Asura and his forces, riding a roaring lion and carrying deadly weapons. In the fierce battle that followed, the Goddess beat Mahishasura and killed him, which was a huge relief for both the Gods and the people.

People worship this Goddess as Peddamma, the divine Mother who felt sorry for her suffering children and saved them. And the Goddess is still here as “Simha Vahini,” which means “the one riding or sitting on a lion.”

Here, it is the norm only to give coconuts to the Goddess. There is also a strange thing that people do here: put coins in a vertical line and make a wish. They think that if they do this, the Goddess will bless them and help them get what they want.

In the month of Chaitra, people celebrate Vasantha Navaratri (March). The temple also celebrates the Durga Navaratri festival during Dussehra in Ashwin (September-October).

Beginning at 06:30 AM, morning Pooja and arati are performed, and after that, daily seva is performed according to the schedule. Every Thursday begins at 3:00 AM with Abhishekam, when special prayers are performed.
