Also known as Navdhanya, Navadhanyalu, Nava Dhanya, 9 Grains, Nine Grains.
Navdhanya, or 9 Whole Grains for Puja & Havan, is an ancient tradition practised in India, where nine different grains are offered to the Gods to show respect and reverence. These nine grains are said to have been chosen by sages from the Vedas and Upanishads since they represent the nine planets or navagrahas. As such, Navdhanya is considered to be a promising offering for worshipping deities in Hindu rituals such as pujas and havans.
The nine Navdhanya grains include rice, wheat, corn, barley, moong dal (split green gram), urad dal (black gram), masoor dal (red lentil), bajra (pearl millet) and jowar (white millet). Each grain has its significance and symbolism associated with it.
